This is amazing, we evolved the alphabet from pictograms to highly stylized characters to letters and now we're going full circle by incorporating emojis such as 🐂 that thousands of years earlier became "a" and 🐟 that became "d"

I wish I had the money to use Oracle SQL databases. I’d still use postgres everywhere, but damn we could spend that cash on so many other nice things

Fellow Portland OR folks, please note that there's a rally happening on 1/14 to push for municipal broadband in PDX. A municipal solution can help us protect net neutrality and put users first.

If this is an approach you support, the event details are over on FB (no account required to view): facebook.com/events/1775718709

I'll be there :)

Any illustrators looking for a weekly gig? We'd like to try having a doodle for each episode of The Recompiler podcast (recompilermag.com/podcast). You'd have 2-3 days from topic to finished graphic on each one. Send a portfolio link to audrey@recompilermag.com

Crowdfunding a hacker zine Show more

Well, I guess in light of recent layoffs (not me...yet, but a significant number of people on my product) there isn’t much point in being discreet about this any more…

I’m looking for my next gig. Senior software developer, with ops expertise. ~10 years experience. Feel free to share. PDX/Remote preferred.

UI/UX things that are overlooked but make life better -

My microwave's turntable rotates at a rate such that, when you cook for 30 second intervals [30s, 1m, 1m30s, etc.] the turntable returns to the same orientation.

This means that if you put in a mug with a handle towards the door, the handle will be towards the door when you're done with most common durations.

It's the little things like that that show that someone paid attention to how an interface is used.

Stickermule really sucks if you sell a couple stickers and want cash for your sales instead of store credit. The store credit expires and you can only request a payout if you have $40 or more. So I have $30 now $25 of which will expire in 30 days and I can't request a payout and I don't want to order more stickers.

It's legit shitty if you are an artist that wants to make a couple bucks with their service.

Whelp… looking like the turbo on the Subaru is probably blown. Not the greatest way to start off the track season.
